This shot was one of several I took at a May Day protest in 2009, held outside the Royal Exchange and Bank of England one month after 1000’s of protesters had gathered for the G20 protest which ended with the killing of Ian Tomlinson. There was a low key police presence and a theme running against police aggression and kettling tactics.
While the protesters and photographers milled about, this man sat down away from the crowd, in Guantanamo style jumpsuit, manacles and a gas mask and started reading the Sun. The headline on the paper sprang out and I took several shots.
Later, I desaturated all but the orange jumpsuit and red banner of the paper, to make it spring out of the background, adding some hefty luminescence to the orange to make it glow.
